Job Title Lead Structural Engineer – Energy, Waste and Infrastructure Sectors

Primary purpose of role;


Contribute to the MWH business goals by providing technical solutions, advice, support to the Operations Manager, Project Managers and Team Leaders by providing technical expertise to ensure that projects is delivered to cost, schedule, technical and quality standards to meet both client and MWH expectations.


Job Description


Due to an increasing portfolio of work, principally within the waste to energy market, MWH’s Energy, Waste and Infrastructure business wishes to recruit a Lead Structural Engineer. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Chartered Structural or Chartered Civil Engineer with significant experience in the detailed design of heavy civil engineering structures in reinforced concrete and structural steelwork.


The ideal candidate will also be experienced in the use of Eurocode standards and will be proficient in the use of common structural design software.


Experience in the energy, waste and nuclear industries would be preferable. Other key attributes include the ability to:


  • Manage and direct site surveys, field investigations and feasibility studies for proposed projects.
  • Plan, programme and co-ordinate reports on site findings for projects.
  • Provide technical expertise in Structural design to meet project needs.
  • Ensure that planned project profitability is achieved or exceeded.
  • Ensure that projects are delivered to the agreed outputs on budget, on time and to quality standards.
  • Plan, forecast and co-ordinate resources with the Operations Manager efficiently.
  • Maintain up to date technical knowledge of survey, design, drafting, project and contract management standards and techniques.
  • Liaise with clients and ensure that projects are managed effectively to ensure delivery in a manner which meets quality, time and budget specifications
  • Provide technical assistance to staff, including training within specific areas of responsibility and expertise as required.
  • Review the work of others and remain focused on important priorities.
  • Mentor less senior members of the team.
  • Undertake appropriate research of existing assets and investigation and design modifications / improvements.
  • Assist with the preparation of expressions of interest and proposals as required.
  • Act as engineer’s representative to ensure the works are completed in accordance with the contract documents.
  • Maintain communication and develop ongoing contacts with clients as required
  • Build relationships with new clients and key stakeholders
  • Using appropriate software to provide advice, solutions and successful project
  • outcomes for clients.
  • Complete all work in line with MWH Core Values and in accordance with
  • MWH Quality Systems and Project Quality Procedures.
  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or other relevant subject.
  • Chartered Engineer, registered with the Engineering Council
  • A member of a relevant professional engineering institution i.e. IStructE.
  • Significant experience in the design of heavy civil engineering structures.
  • Experienced in the use of Eurocodes.
  • Outstanding skill level in business development.
  • Ability to integrate into a team and provide technical management over other members of the treatment team.
  • Experience in the management of staff and staff development.
  • Experienced level of decision making.
  • Computer literate and be proficient in the use of structural design software, as well as the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently.
  • Strong communication skills – both written and oral.
  • Excellent client service focus.
  • Exceptional organisational skills and able to multi-task.
